RIDE YOUR BIKE!
By Johnny Chan

The last time i filled up on gas was about a month ago, when it was at
$2.99 per gallon, i still have about a gallon of that left in my car; i
simply do the superfun and superhealthy thing of riding my bike
whereever i go from East L.A. area: 12 miles to Glendale Galleria, 15
miles to L.A. County Clerk's office in Norwalk, 24 miles to Cal State
Long Beach (the 48 mile round trip at only aerobic heartrate (-75% max)
will easily burn 2,000 calories, and of course the 2.25 miles to
work.....
Quality of life is perfectly great without using an automobile; though
I did drive over 2 weeks ago to get to a bike race..... in fact, the
last few times i drove my car was only to get to bike races! I've
successfully switched to making smaller supermarket excursions on my
bike every 2-3 days, which brings me to the question; what about the
surging prices of milk? I'd hate to see the same idea implemented on a
certain brand(s) of dairy, which would terribly waste all that
perishable-good food product..... Johnny

2008 CYCLOCROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS WEEKEND!
Cyclo-cross world Championships are already counting down: tomorrow morning (Saturday) the beginning with the Juniors and with the U23 races. Then on Sundaythe most waited events: Women and Elite Men.
Last year the United States made huge grounds winning three silver medals (elite men, women and Jr Men). The elite races saw the race favorites fall victim to the muddy course and crashes. The USA’s Jonathan Page rode a super clean race taking the lead in the final stages only to have the championship taken away in the last stretch by the only surviving Belgian star. Katie Compton showed her power by keeping with the top women riding a conservative race, she challenged the eventual race winner in the final sprint. Look out for Katie in 2008! Danny Summerhill showed the power of the future US crossers coming back from a crash to win the silver!

SO CAL’S YOUTH REIGNS SUPREME IN CYCLOCROSS!
So Cal’s own, Chance Noble will be representing the USA Saturday in the U23 race. This is Chance’s third appearance at CX Worlds… an amazing feat for a young athlete and one from Southern California. Chance races for Cal Giant/Specialized for the past two seasons and represents the team as one of the top U23 racers in the country. With cyclocross growing exponentially in So Cal each season, look for more from our youth in the coming years. Chance began racing cross when he was 10 years old and can be considered a veteran now at age 18. Recent success also includes Junior female racer, Coryn Rivera (Redline) who recently won not only the Elite Women district championship, the SoCalCross Elite Women’s title, and the CX National Championships for two years straight in only her 3rd season of cross! This past season a new breed of young racers made cyclcross their fall/winter sport making the future even brighter!

HELP CHANCE NOBLE IN HIS ROAD TO THE WORLD CYCLOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS:
Join us Sunday, 1/27 (5p-8p) CX World Championship Party at Florentine’s Grill in Fullerton
Sunday’s party will celebrate the SoCalCross season and will show streaming video of the 2008 CX World Championships. The party is also a fundraiser for Chance Noble to help cover his travel expenses. Chance has spent the last two weeks in Europe gaining some much needed racing experience prior to the World Championships. Even with support from his team, Chance will have to cover much of the costs on his own. This weekend’s festivities include a silent auction including: a Team Discovery autographed jersey from Tony Cruz, a George Hincapie autographed ditty bag and Cobles Baby DVD, Cane Creek’s sleek new headset, an SDG saddle and seatpost, a Specialized winter jacket and door prizes including Pro Cyclocross DVDs! In addtion, Chance has produced organic cyclocross t-shirts (Ink Clothing): Go Here

Hillclimb marks the end of Bakersfield Weekend

Below: Team Bearclaw rider, Jason Lowetz, rides up the run-up and grabs a dollar off the ground in the proccess.

To end the weekend of racing in Bakersfield with a dose of pain to their quads, racers shouldered their bikes several hundred feet up a 90-100% grade dirt hill. Brent Prenzlow was first to ring the bell and take his $100 cash prize. Michael Easter and Fritz Bottger took 2nd and 3rd. Everyone else crawled their way up only to avoid the shame of quitting.

The SCNCA Championships and SCPS #8: Bakersfield Cross

"It was a blast from the races to the awards banquet with battles on the course,
victors receiving their leaders jerseys, and men in daisy dukes and tight shirts, kilts, boots, funny hats or no shirts. Other spectators handed out beer, money and old dirty shoes to racers as they charged the course. The weekend was something more like Cross Vegas… with a better course, of course." more here...
