CROSS FEVER RACE 2 THIS SUNDAY, 1/10/10:

Next up is a super-fun course for Cross Fever race number two (aka the second to the last CX race of the series)... High Desert Cross at Pelona Vista Park in Palmdale this coming Sunday, 1/10!  The course is reversed from last season and starts on grass then onto a roller-coaster mostly smooth dirt track into a run up and back to the grass for some fun Euro-patterned-flavored turns and barrier section.

Keep your fitness up while having fun at the same time! Palmdale is just 35 minutes from Santa Clarita. The weather should be a relatively cool 60 degrees on race day! Don't be shy, come on out and join the fun! Hope to see you there!!!   DOWNLOAD RACE FLYER HERE

In solidarity with our Nor Cal Crossers and the buzz of the bra for Breat Cancer Awareness... special prizes and a bonus series point will be awarded for showcasing your favorite colored bra during this Sunday's cyclocross race!

IMPORTANT NOTE:  This event is sanctioned by USA Cycling, therefore you need to have your annual license for 2010 or pay one-day license fee of $10.  It is suggested you purchase your annual license online.  Plus valuable upgrade points which can get you to the next cross category as well as to the front row at CX National Championships next season... start collecting your points now!

RACE REPORT & RESULTS - CROSS FEVER #1:  1/3/2010 -- WINTER BRINGS 80+ DEGREES TO DAM CROSS!!!

Visions of the start of the 2009 Southern California cyclocross season in September returned to kick-off our January 2010 Cross Fever Series Sunday at our famed UCI course at Hansen Dam Park in northern Los Angeles with familiar very warm and dry 80+ degree temperatures.  So much for winter conditions!  Oh well, it was certainly a beautiful day in the park and it was so nice to see over 100 racers attend the Cross Fever Series opener with some as far away as Arizona!

The Juniors showed enforce including some of the So Cal High School MTB League (www.SoCalDirt.org) riders getting in a tune-up for their up-coming season as the sport of cyclocross offers many of the dynamics of a mountain bike race.  We were also fortunate to get some big name elite racers including:  Pua Sawicki (Team Mata) National Marathon MTB Champion, Sid Taberlay (Sho-Air) 5 time Australian National MTB champ and World Champ medalist now one of our top SoCalCrossers along with Brent Prenzlow (Celo Pacific/B+L) one of our most accomplished cross racers in the history of CX in SoCal. Hmmm.  Sounds like an opportunity for a MTB/CX clinic??? Maybe next year!

The 1.5 mile course was designed to reduce the bumpy sections of the course as well as some of the steep climbs, but however you slice it up, Hansen Dam will always be a physical course with its bowl-like and compact layout. The beauty of this park is the potential to create many different course layouts, so for our series finale on January 17th, course designers - Jeff Herring and Jonathan Livesay will debut a brand new circuit!  We also hope to bring you some UCI magic here at Hansen Dam for the 2010-11 cyclocross season!

Since the peak of the cyclocross season ended in December, the field sizes were inevitably going to be smaller, so the Cross Fever Series promoters decided to reward its participants and have introduced some new and "fun" categories like tandem, women single speed plus an overall series clydesdale competition rewards racers in the non-elite categories.  By combining more categories within each wave along with a mass start per wave, there is still a "large" field dynamic.  Racers will also have the opportunity to win their category as well as see how they finished overall in their wave.  Prizes are awarded to the top overall finishers in the wave and category winners received the coveted Shimano-H20 Overdrive Series Leader's jerseys by Voler!  This allows for more riders to receive recognition that may not have during the prime time of the CX season in the fall.  The January 2010 Cross Fever Series will also reward participation by offering a bonus cash purse in the elite men and women's waves.

Now on to the results from SoCalCross Fever #1, January 3rd 2010:  Fresh off the holiday celebrations just a couple days prior, SoCalCrossers converged on Hansen Dam with 2010 category winners from 7 to 67!  15-year-old Hannah Rae Finchamp (SoCalCross-CICLE) already an accomplished tri-athlete and with her first full season of cyclocross including the National CX Championships in Bend, OR won the Junior women 15-18 as well as the overall Junior wave then raced in all women's race later that day for a 3rd place overall!  Edward Kronfli III (PAA-ReMaxx) an accompished SoCal High School MTB league racer won the boys 15-18.  Two-time Junior 10-14 So Cal Cross Prestige Series Champion, Hannah Eckvahl (Velo Bella) continued her winning ways while the youngest racer at 10 years of age and third overall in the wave Sean Macelroy won the boys 10-14.

Some of the day's highlights:  Jack Lindquist (Shimano-Swarm!) and his partner Megan Dean rocking the two-seater (they bent a 40-spoke wheel during pre-ride!) won our inaugural tandem cross race!  Megan Cordes (The Great Chiweenie) won the first ever women's singlespeed division.  National CX silver medalist Bob Llamas (Montrose Bike Shop) won the 55+ men's race.  Prestige Series champion, Brent Prenzlow won the 35+ Men's race.  Robert DeFerrante (PAA-Remaxx) took the 45+ men's race.  Robin MacDonald Foley (Trek Bike of Ventura) won the 55+ masters women's race.  Paula Rogers (SoCalCross-CICLE) won the 45+ women's race.  Dinorah Lawson (Celo Pacific) won the 35+ women's race.  Pua Sawicki rode away from the women's field in the first ever all women's wave!  Smokin' Sid Taberlay won the elite men's race and overall wave.  Geoff Albert (SoCalCross-CICE) braved the tough conditions in the final race to win the Single Speed elite race.

CLYDESDALE COMPETITION:

Your finish within your field is calculated as a percentage.  For example - there are 10 racers in the Men's 4 field. 2 Clydesdales are entered within the 10.   Big Bubba get's 3rd place or he beat 70% of the field.  Fred "I like to eat" Hometown get's 8th place or he beat 20% of the field.

 Scoring:

100% = 10 points

90-99% = 9 points

80-89% = 8 points

70-79% = 7 points

60-69% = 6 points

50-59% = 5 points

40-49% = 4 points

30-39% = 3 points

20-29% = 2 points

1-19% = 1 points

If two racers in two seperate fields tie on percentage then the heavier rider wins by getting +1 point. If two racers tie on percentage within the same race the best placed gets +1 point.

Hope to see you there!  SoCalCross Fever will take you to the "real" end of the 2009-10 cyclocross season!
